Swing Swing Swing! It's EASY to hang one in your house!
I have a little experience here...and it's actually easy!
The first time I saw someone hang a swing in their house I was absolutely flabbergasted. I immediately knew that I was going to hang swings as soon as we owned a home again. And I have. 5 times so far, and the sixth time will be in a few weeks in my toddlers room. She is absolutely getting a swing in her room as well.
Let's go over the basics.
Supplies
You are going to need a drill and one or two eye bolts, depending on what style swing you are hanging. Then you will need a stud finder, to find the studs to drill into, and a drill bit just a bit smaller than the eye bolt threads. You will also need a long screwdriver or something similar to finish twisting the eye bolt into place, and a measuring tape. Most swings come with all of the rope and such needed so you don't have to worry about that. If you are doing a more DIY swing you will need rope. I'll cover that when I do my toddlers swing in a few months.
How to actually do it.
Locate your studs, Consider the space the swing needs around it to be sure you are placing it well. If your swing had two sides you will need to measure the distance between them to make sure you space it correctly. Drill into the stud, then screw in the eye bolt(s). Connect the carabiner(s), attach the swing, secure the carabiner(s), test for stability, and let them loose to have fun!
Extra tall ceilings or studs in the wrong place?
If you have extra tall ceilings most swings come with straps to allow for that. if they don't then you will need to purchase extra lengths of rope to compensate.
If your studs are not ideally placed for swing placement you will need to do an extra step. I had to do this for the pod style swing in my little boys' room. You just take a 2x4 and screw it into the 2 closest studs, creating a brace. Then you mount the swing to the 2x4. You can create the brace on the room side of the ceiling like I did, or in the attic above. If you do it in the attic you are going to have to drill farther up into the ceiling to get the eye bolts placed and therefore need a bigger hole.
I recommend just placing it on the room side of the ceiling and if you really want to, you can paint it the same color of the ceiling to make it 'disappear'. I am not that picky, so I just have a 2x4 mounted to the ceiling and it's fine. If I ever have to paint that ceiling I will paint the 2x4 as well.
The weight capacity will depend on the weight capacity of the eye bolts you used and of the swing itself. The DIY swings can easily handle 200 plus pounds because they are wood and the eye bolts are rated for that. The packaged ones you will need to read the manuals to make sure you know the weight capacity.
Happy Swinging!
