Picking the Paint

A sweet toddler girl bedroom, in a creamy yellow, with lots of warm textures and budget diy’s.

The Color Inspiration

You should have heard the responses, and seen the faces, when I told people I was painting my toddler girl’s room yellow. It was pretty funny actually. I was very inspired by the room Gabe and Anna did for their daughter over on the In Honor of Design blog and instagram. This room was a navy blue before for our older sons who have recently moved out. I had to prime it to get a good idea of which yellow to go with after narrowing it down from about 20, to 2.

The Actual Process of Painting

I do not enjoy painting. I do it because it needs to be done, and I am good at it, even if I don’t like it. We sold the previous beds and decor. And I prepped all of the surfaces, including a coat of primer before I made my final decision on color. Ultimately I went with Inviting Ivory by Sherwin Williams, which is oddly classified as an orange color. But in our space it is definitely a creamy yellow.

This room took THREE coats of paint, AFTER a coat of primer. Yes, I did yell those words. Because I was, and still am, very annoyed by this. I spent $150 in paint. Yikes. Thankfully I used a paint we had on hand already to do the closet, which compliments the creamy yellow quite nicely.

Baseboards on carpet are actually not that hard. You need a piece of kind of flimsy carboard, think the boxes individually packaged snacks come in. You slide the cardboard down under the baseboard and paint the baseboard. You can then just slide the cardboard down without taking it out from under the baseboard and keep painting all the way down the wall.

To get the high areas, I just took the handle off of my broom and screwed it onto my paint roller. Those are pretty universal and as long as you have a broom handy you have an extension rod. It’s magic!
