My teenager has impressive taste

Our Process
So, my daughter found an inspiration image, and sent it to me. But when you’re working off of inspiration you have to figure out how to make the space work for the person you’re designing for. And the budget. Her inspiration has barn doors on the wall behind the bed, and other details that aren’t realistic for what her final space is going to be.
So we settled on a chocolate brown wall behind the new bed, and creamy white walls for the rest. Then from there we are adding lots of texture, in creams and whites and browns. And she REALLY wants a cute cow picture.
So, I scour Amazon and find things I think she would like, based off of the inspiration. Then I pull her in and get her feedback. Tonight she didn’t like ANY of the bedding I had pulled, so I took the feedback and we searched some more and found two options she liked. We do this for all of the major options. But, I usually reserve one item for Mom’s choice. In this instance it’s the rug. Her inspiration picture has a lot of pattern in the headboard but she doesn’t want that. But we need pattern and dimension somewhere in the room, so I found an affordable rug I think she’s going to love once it’s here.
Let’s walk through her top picks
A neutral bed with channel details and a chunky leg. She is pairing that with a soft fuzzy cream comforter, in a full size. Because a full sized comforter on a twin bed is going to come down about an extra 10-ish inches on both sides and give you plenty of comforter to triple fold over at the top for that luxurious look everyone wants in a bed. She also wants to bring in a cow print, so she chose to do that through another luxuriously fluffy throw blanket to style across the end of her bed. Picture this against a warm chocolate wall and it is going to have dimension and coziness.
Cliche decor does NOT make a space
So, she wants a “country” room. But that does not mean we are going to fill it with sunflowers, gingham, ruffles and cowboy boots. Not that there’s anything inherently wrong with those things, but she does not want them. She DOES want a giant picture of a highland cow though, and some buffalo check accents. I recently heard someone on IG say that a king size pillow fits perfectly all the way across a twin sized bed and my mind was blown. So, over the next little bit I plan to switch all of my kids over to king sized pillows. The teenager of course prefers a silk pillowcase, and she specifically requested brown. You will notice that all of the things that make this room ‘country’ are the easily replaceable things. The art, the decorative pillow covers, etc. This makes it incredibly easy to switch the ‘theme’ or feel of the room if she decides in 6 months she wants something else.
The anchor pieces
When people ask me for design advice, I ALWAYS start with rugs and curtains. They are cheaper than furniture, and make a giant impact in the space. Whatever space that is. We already have white curtains in her room, so those will stay for budget purposes, and we have a large wooden dresser. It’s a little lighter than the one in this picture, but will be staying, unless I find something for an amazing price on marketplace. The rug in there currently is lavendar and gray so that will obviously be going when I sell her current stuff. This rug brings in much needed pattern, but it’s not high contrast. It will provide visual interest without overwhelming the space. And it’s very affordable.
Cheers!
Melinda
