How I buy holiday decor

When I’m shopping for holiday decor, everything except Christmas, that is. I always looks for the flat decor. Flat decor is SO much easier to store. And when you like to decorate for most minor holidays, but are a family of 8, space is at a premium. My motto “ buy flat decor, it’s easier to store”. The only things that aren’t flat in my 4th of July decor are the hats. We have 3 Uncle Sam style hats that we’ve had for years, they are cheap, but I love them so I don’t let the kids play with them, they are strictly decor. They nest inside of each other, then I turn them upside down in the storage bin, and put stuff in them.

All of my Valentines decor, AND all of my 4th of July decor, AND our birthday banners that we reuse, all live in ONE regular sized storage tote.

Now, you get to see the impact that flat decor can make in your home.

The Front Porch

Flowers from Lowe’s which were on super sale for the holiday, and American flags make for a simple but patriotic porch display. The wreath, which needs my mothers fluffing skills badly, sports a star garland, and a couple of flags. The garland and flags both pack flat into my bin, and the flowers are annuals that will live for the next few months then get tossed.

The Dining Room

The garlands on the large artwork and the flags in the centerpiece really make this space pop. Then you add the garland down the runner and the stars hanging from the chandelier and the festivity is kind of in your face and fantastic. We love some good Independence day decor around here! The best part, it all packs flat into a ziploc bag. Winning.

The Kitchen

Our kitchen works hard for our family, so I try to keep decor simple and out of the way in here. A garland strung on the front of our open shelving another of the Uncle Sam hats, and a few strings of blue stars taped up on the range hood make it festive without being fussy. Some star wands added to our wooden utensil pot, and the flower vase add to the festive feeling without being in the way. And yes, the common theme here is that it - All packs away into a ziploc bag.

The Living Room

In the living room I focus on the mantel. I have small children so spreading decor out into the rest of the room would be, well, silly. The red and white garlands are actually Christmas wooden beaded garlands from Hobby Lobby. I’ve used them for Christmas, Valentine, and now the 4th of July. This year I added the blue metallic stars on strings from my 6 year olds 2nd birthday party. Yep, those puppies have been in use for 4 years. They are still going strong, and I have low key, a million of them, all stacked, wrapped in rubber bands, and, you know it, put in a ziploc bag. The large silver star is a random piece that I picked up at $ Tree I think a few years ago, and yes it flattens down for flat packing. I also use what I already have and pull it front and center if I can. A blanket that leans patriotic folded over the ottoman and a couple of star wands in the plants.

So, buy flat decor, it’s easier to store! And grab some gallon sized ziploc bags to store it in!
